You may be interested in knowing the very first carport was built in America.
It was 1909 and according to the Carport Integrity Policy for the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office, was used by the Prairie School architect Walter Burley Griffin in Elmhurst, Illinois. Less than 5 years later, another carport, called an “auto space” then, was built in Minneapolis.
However, it wasn’t until Frank Lloyd Wright began using carports in his “Usonian” home built for Herbert Jacobs of Madison, Wisconsin, that it became popular and worthy of recognition. Mr. Jacobs said, “A car is not a horse, and it doesn’t need a barn. Cars are built well enough now so that they do not require elaborate shelter.” The year was 1936.
Looking at the carport industry today and the strides we have taken, and how commonplace a carport is today, it is amazing that a few simple architects made history in one drawing, for one man’s home.
Today, we build carports built to be energy harvesting machines and to become a money making operation. They are a standard for a professional atmosphere and appreciated by employees, residents and clients worldwide.
