If you are like us, when it comes to cleaning, it is easy to let the time escape you. Then, as time passes by you look a that dusty or muddy mess of leaves and possibly growing moss and other debrie and you realize it is time for your carport to have a good wash down.

Let’s start with the supplies you need:

  1. Bleach
  2. Soap Solution
  3. Water (Of Course…lol!)
  4. Garden Sprayer and hose
  5. Soft Bristle Brush and Telescoping Pole
  6. Protective Gear (Goggle, Gloves, Mask for allergies, et cetera)
  7. Rust Remover
  8. Scouring Pad
  9. Metal Polish Base
  10. Metal Sealant

Now Let’s Get To Work!

Our first step is to take stock of the job, if the job looks too big for you to handle, then call a professional to come in and do teh work for you. Otherwise, plan on this project eating a good work day of time.

Create a solution that is 1 part Bleach to 5 parts water. Use the garden sprayer and hose down the entire top of the carport, especially the places that setttle under trees or foliage. Let it sit for about 30 minutes, then high pressure wash off the bleach water solution.

Next, we want to check and remove any rust or oxidization on your carport. Your rust remover should be chosen based on type of metal used on your carport, so please read the bottle carefully. If oxidization is the issue, then use a metal polishing paste intead of the rust remover. follow the directions on your bottle and begin scrubbing. This is the hardest part of the project, getting those tough stains and rust off the carport. Use a rougher scouring pad for harder spots. Once you have gotten off all the rust that will come off or you feel as though your finger will bleed through your gloves if you scour any more, it is time to rinse the carport again.

After rinsing do one more soapy wash, this time using the telescoping pole and brush, no bleach this time. Rinse immediately, especially if in the sun, dried soap on a carport is no fun.

Finally, after your carport is completely dry, apply the metal sealant. Use a generous amount and make sure you spread the sealant evenly, including on the poles. We use the sealant so it will be a very, very long time before you ever have to go through this clean up again.

You are Done! WHEW! Not too bad and on a nice day could actually be fun, though probably not. Go inside, clean yourself up and sit by a nice window were in between your favorite show you can review the great job you just did.
